Skanda Shashti is a significant Hindu festival dedicated to Lord Skanda/Subramanya, observed on the Sashti Tithi of Shukla Paksha each month. It marks the moment when the fiery warrior son of Lord Shiva and Parvati descended to dispel darkness and destroy evil. Born from Shiva’s third eye, he was nurtured into the six-faced, twelve-handed deity Shanmukha/Arumugam.

Lord Subramanya is revered as the embodiment of courage, wisdom, protection, and divine knowledge. Worshipping him is believed to fulfill all wishes and destroy enemies. Born to defeat the demon Tarakasura, Subramanya emerged as the god of war, fulfilling a boon granted by Lord Shiva. Representing six siddhis, Lord Subramanya is revered as their bestower, especially in South India. According to legends, he emerged as one of the prominent deities in the southern direction after he chose to live in South India, leaving his heavenly abode.

From him emerged the six divine syllables – Sa Ra Va Na Ba Va, each representing his powerful six siddhis and his six radiant faces. In deep reverence, devotees observe Skanda Shashti through a sacred six-day journey of fasting and prayer, seeking inner transformation, cultivating goodness, strengthening willpower, burning away negativity, and crushing obstacles caused by enemies. Through these six sacred days, one strives to awaken the divine six within, paving the way for victory in all areas of life.
